This careful maturation brings together gentle sweetness and layered complexity. On the nose, aromas of wild heather, pine, and cedar lead into richer notes of crème caramel, complemented by fresh orchard fruits such as apples and pears, alongside hints of tropical mango. It was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. Talisker and Clynelish, in Brora, are classic examples of 'Clearance distilleries', they were built by landlords who cleared crofters from their ancestral lands. Those landlords then used the cleared peoples as labourers in their farms and other enterprises. All that was possible thanks to laws enacted after 1746 that protected the rights of 'entrepreneurs' to exploit more profitable farming methods.

After the MacAskill brothers cleared some land and brought sheep in, they decided to build a distillery. Cleared peoples helped build and run the distillery, the brothers failed to keep the distillery running and it was surrendered to the bank in 1848. For the next 30 years a series of new owners failed to keep the distillery operational; it kept changing hands until 1880. On that year the owner of Dailuaine distillery bought it and promptly built a pier. The pier facilitated the loading of barrels loaded with whisky onto waiting ships.

Talisker was sold once again in 1892 and Roderick Kemp, the owner, went on to buy Macallan distillery. The new owner ran the distillery until 1862 when he sold it to J. L. Mackie. By 1878, Peter J. Mackie, nephew of J. L. Mackie was running the distillery. Peter Mackie was well known for his hard working attitude. It started as a farm distillery in 1817 and remained a family business until 1905. During the original tenure, the distillery saw periods of boosted production, expansion and growth. A rise in excise duty, the temperance movement and other factors hit the distillery. Unlike most distilleries in the area Bladnoch remained open until 1905.

In 1911 an Irish distillery acquired Bladnoch and produced spirit irregularly until 1937. Rumours were spread by the mighty Distillers Company Limited (DCL) that 'Irish whiskey had no future'. Even though the company was profitable and had a healthy inventory it was mothballed for some 12 years. In 1949 the distillery was bought and the new owners sold the matured stocks and sent the distilling equipment to Sweden.

After a couple of more changes in ownership, the distillery was reopened in 1956.
