Melanio Robusto Maduro
This 2012 addition to the Oliva family’s long tobacco growing tradition is named after the family’s patriarch and first tobacco grower, Melanio Oliva. The Oliva Melanio Robusto Maduro is a handmade, rich premium cigar made with aged ligero fillers that give the cigar a rich and robust flavor. The wrapper is grown by the Olivas in Ecuador – this Robusto cigar will give you full, smooth smoke full of flavors.
Melanio Oliva first grew tobacco in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba in 1886. His growing operations were suspended while he fought in the Cuban War of Independence. After returning from the war Melanio resumed his operations. In the early 1920’s Melanios son Hipolito Oliva took over the growing operations. Hipolito cultivated the Oliva family fields for several decades.
As the revolution triumphed in Cuba the tobacco landscape changed for the cigar manufacturing sector. Hipolito’s son Gilberto Oliva shifted from growing to brokering tobacco. In the early 60 the pressure became too great and Gilberto traveled from country to country in search of the distinct Cuban taste. His travels took him to Honduras, Panama, Mexico and even the Philippines. Gilberto finally found fertile ground in Nicaragua. Today Gilberto along with his family are Nicaragua’s second largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco.
