Auchroisk 1990 is a superb release by Signatory Vintage - independent bottlers based in Pitlochry. This whisky was distilled at the Auchroisk Distillery in February 1990 and it was aged for 23 years in Hogshead Barrels (No 3663). It offers flavours of dried fruits (strawberry, raspberry), delicate hint of oak and creamy caramel. The Finish is interestingly herbal and long lasting.
Auchroisk distillery was founded in 1974 by wine merchants Justerini and Brooks. The whisky was sold under the name Singleton soon after that and it was being sold under that name at least until the mid 90s. The distillery produced single malt for blenders mainly. That has not changed and these days some 90% of the production of whisky ends up in the world famous J&B blend. The architecture of the distillery has earned many awards in the past few decades. Its system to prevent washbacks from overflowing (with the release of a chemical compound that 'cuts' the foam) is unique in Scotland. In the 2000s the distillery increased its production capacity by 25%. All this extra spirit ends up in the world's top selling J&B blend. These days the name Singleton is used for three different whiskies sold in different markets (Glendullan in North America, Dufftown in Europe and Glen Ord in Asia) and other than limited releases like the Manager's Choice (2010) and the 30 year old (2012) no official releases are available.
