The legal Balmenach distillery was built in 1824. This made Balmenach one of the first few distilleries to be licensed under the Excise Act 1823.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the second half of the 19th century the distillery was connected to the Strathspey Railway line with its own railway track. In the 20th century the distillery changed hands a couple of times and in 1997 Inver House distillers acquired it. Caorunn gin is produced at the distillery today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe distillery uses a short fermentation period and small pot stills. This produces a thick and rich spirit that blenders use to add body and character to their blends. At the time of writing, Inver House distillers has no plans to release Balmenach as a single malt.
