Benrinnes 8 years old Cran Mor
Benrinnes 8 years old Carn Mor, This Benrinnes is a perfect example of this classic distillery. Meaty and very malty, this is also an independently bottled whisky from the Carn Mor Company. A bottle matured in a bourbon Hogshead, a bottle of 680 from 2 casks.
The Benrinnes distillery was founded in 1835 close to the site of an earlier Benrinnes distillery that was destroyed by a flood. Soon after the distillery was sold several times until 1922 when John Dewar and Sons (JDS) acquired it. Not long after that JDS merged with Distillery Company Limited (DCL). Not much happened at the distillery, most of the single malt produced at the distillery ended up in the Dewar's blends. It wasn't until 1955 that the distillery was rebuilt and some ten years later a 'saladin box' was installed there to process barley. The Saladin box remained operational until 1984 when the distillery stopped producing its own malted barley. This happened after the production capacity was expanded by adding three additional stills. The distillery adopted the 'partial triple distillation' method in 1974. No official releases are known apart from the semi-official 'Flora and Fauna' (1991) and 'Special Release' (2014) bottlings. These days, many independent bottlings exist and they range from cask strength, matured releases to young and chill-filtered botlings.
