Description

Aberfeldy 16 year old

This 16-year-old whisky is a standout addition to the Aberfeldy range, offering a rich and layered tasting experience. Aged for 16 years, the whisky develops deep and complex flavors, including notes of dark chocolate and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel. To further enhance its profile, the whisky spends an additional six months finishing in Oloroso sherry casks. This final maturation imparts subtle fruitcake and dried fruit flavors, adding depth and sweetness. Stephanie Macleod, Aberfeldy's Master Blender, describes this sherry influence as a "gentle kiss," delicately complementing the whisky's core character.

Aberfeldy Distillery

Aberfeldy distillery was opened in 1898 by the John Dewar and Sons company. It remained operational until 1917 when barley shortages forced it to close down. It reopened in 1919 and produced whisky intended for blends until the Second World War broke out.

During the war the distillery remained shut. After the war concluded and barley shortages were over, the demand for Aberfeldy whisky caused stock shortages. The whisky was laid for just 3 years as opposed to the usual 7 years.

Not much happened at the distillery for a couple of decades until 1972 when it was enlarged and four steam-heated stills were installed. Production continued and in 1999 a 12 year old single malt was released. A year later, a visitor centre was opened to the public.

To this day, Aberfeldy single malt whisky is the main component of the Dewar's blended Scotch.
