Lowland Single Malt Scotch
Like the famous Highland whisky region, the Lowland region was created by the Wash Act 1784. That act of parliament did not regulate this region in the same way the Highland region was. Instead, Lowland distilleries were (wrongly) taxed according to their 'daily discharge rate of their [pot] stills'. It was assumed that a pot still could only be used once a day. Lowland distillers were quick to take advantage of this assumption and in a couple of months had flooded the entire UK market with spirit of low quality.
Those days of regulations on one region and taxation on another region are a thing of the past. The Lowlands are going through a revival with closed distilleries re opening and new ones being built.
