Bowmore Distillery is located in Islay. It was founded in 1779 and like many distilleries it went through many sells and acquisitions throughout its history. The most notable acquisition took place in 1963, when production capacity increased, and 1994 when the distillery was bought by the Suntory group from Japan.
From then on Bowmore introduced a range of whiskies with different age statements. These days, the distillery is on of very few distilleries to still have its malting floors operational. Although there are 3 malting floors at the distillery, the vast majority of the barley comes from maltings at different locations.
Its whisky has a distinctive and predominantly smokey flavour. Phenolic and medicinal flavours are subdued. The distillery uses cloudy wort and a short fermentation period of just 48 hours.
