Octomore 14.3 showcases the essence of Islay barley, cultivated just a stone's throw away from the Octomore distillery on Octomore Farm. This exceptional single malt places a spotlight on the profound influence of this natural, unadulterated ingredient and pays homage to the resurgence of the local farming community responsible for its cultivation.
Adam Hannett, the Head Distiller, exhibits his exceptional expertise in coaxing out the Islay barley's flavors in this high-provenance single malt. It undergoes a maturation process in a blend of first-fill ex-American whiskey casks and second-fill wine casks. These oak elements harmoniously interact with the grain, preserving the terroir and the distinctive character of the Islay barley.
Upon nosing, one cannot miss the unmistakable aromas of warm, sweet mash, intertwined with the gentle biscuity notes of malted barley, complementing the earthy essence of peat smoke. As the smoldering peat lingers, a delicate balance is struck between the creamy porridge and cereal facets of the Islay barley, alongside hints of butterscotch, honeycomb, and a subtle undertone of vanilla.
Bruichladdich Distillery
This distillery was built in 1881 by the owners of grain whisky distilleries in Glasgow. This distillery (and the two grain distilleries) were used to supply the market with blended whisky. When the distillery was built, it differentiated itself from other Islay distilleries for its modern design and tall stills which produced a lighter spirit.
The distillery was badly affected by a fire in 1934 and, after it refurbished, it went through many changes of ownership. In 2001 a group of investors acquired it and promptly appointed legendary distiller Jim McEwan as head of distillation.
Under that ownership, the distillery was revitalised and acquired cult status among whisky enthusiasts. Remy Cointreau, the current owners, took over it in 2012.
The spirit produced at the distillery has a distinctive freshness and acidity. This characteristic shines even the most heavily peated expression from the distillery: Octomore.
