One of the oldest distilleries in Campbeltown, Glengyle was founded in 1872 by William Mitchell who then sold the buildings and distillery in 1919. In 1925 the distillery was closed down. Over 75 years later, William Mitchell's great great nephew has since bought the old buildings and rebuilt GlenGyle distillery. Previous attempts to reopen it in the 1940's and 1950's failed.
In 2004 it officially started production again and has released 7 limited edition 'Work in Progress' whiskies. In 2016 the distillery released its 12 year old whisky under the name Kilkerran. Demand for Kilkerran whiskies is huge and releases are quickly snapped up by enthusiasts.
