This region was created in 1784 by the Wash Act. 17 counties in Scotland were classified as Highland and many regulations were imposed on them. Among the many regulations, the type of grain allowed for distillation, shape and size of pot still and number of distilleries per parish were the most important. Over time, Highland whisky became known for being consistent and of high quality.
