Founded in Kendal in the mid-1800s, Gawith Hoggarth remains a distinguished manufacturer of premium tobaccos and snuffs. Upholding a legacy of craftsmanship, the company continues to utilize high-quality raw materials, often processing them with original machinery dating back to the 1750s.
The history of tobacco production in Kendal dates back to 1792, when Thomas Harrison, a local resident, returned from Glasgow, Scotland, where he had mastered the art of snuff manufacturing. Harrison brought with him 50 tons of second-hand equipment, transported entirely on horseback. Ownership of his enterprise eventually passed to his son-in-law, Samuel Gawith, who established Samuel Gawith & Co. This eponymous company continues to operate in Kendal to this day.
Following Samuel Gawith’s death in 1865, the business was inherited by his two eldest sons and initially managed by trustees, including Henry Hoggarth and John Thomas Illingworth. In 1867, Illingworth departed to establish his own firm, which operated until the 1980s. Subsequently, Samuel Gawith's youngest son partnered with Henry Hoggarth to form Gawith Hoggarth TT, Ltd.
Today, both Samuel Gawith & Co. and Gawith Hoggarth TT proudly maintain their operations in Kendal, producing world-renowned snuffs and tobacco products that honor centuries of tradition.
