Crabbie's Yardhead Highland Single Malt 70cl 40% ABV

A great value, Highland single malt bottled by Crabbie's and named Yardhead (the original premises of John Crabbie were once located in the Yardheads of Leith). This whisky was distilled at an undisclosed Highland distillery and delivers a sweet, malty flavour with some sherbet and wood spice.

Crabbie's

John Crabbie & Co started as a merchant in Edinburgh, Scotland. When founder John took over from Miller Crabbie, his fatger, he expanded the family business and acquired the site of a former brewery in Leith where he set up his headquarters. The company expanded its operations in 1852 with the opening of the Haddington Grain Distillery. Crabbie & Co produced gin and other  liqueurs, the most famous of his liqueurs was Green Ginger Wine.

The Haddington Distillery did not operate for long. eventually John Crabbie was named chairman for the North British Grain Distillery. His Crabbie's company was acquired by Distillers Company Limited (DCL).

In the 1980s, DCL sold off one of its many acquisitions with  Crabbie's being one of them. Crabbie's buyers were Macdonald & Muir who at the time also owned Glenmorangie distillery and the much missed Bailie Nicol Jarvie blend. This latter company sold Crabbie's once again to Halewood Artisanal Spirits.

Under the ownership of Halewood, the brand Crabbie's was put back on the whisky scene. There were plans to build a distillery near the site of the company's original headquarters in Leith. To rise awareness of the brand, a range of whiskies distilled at various distilleries from all over Scotland was bottled.

Works at the new Bonnington distillery were completed after lengthy delays caused by archeological discoveries that shged light on the history of Leith. In 2020 the first casks were filled. The spirit is taking an experimental approach using different cuts from the distillation.
