Mortlach distillery
Mortlach is a malt whisky distillery located in the outskirts of Dufftown in the Speyside. It was founded in 1823, on the same year that the Excise Act was enacted. The distillery was sold to the owners of Glen Grant distillery who decommissioned the distillery and used its equipment at their distillery in Rothes.
In the 1850's George Cowie and his son Alex took over the distillery and started to produce whisky once more. Under their ownership Mortlach whisky became a favourite among 19th century blenders. The Cowie family retained ownership of the distillery until 1923 when it was sold to John Walker & Sons. Soon Distillers Company Limited acquired John Walker and Mortlach has been part of their portfolio ever since.
This whisky has a unique character and it s achieved by employing a 'partial triple distillation method'. This together with the usage of clear wort, and by minimising copper contact results in a heavy and 'meaty' spirit ideal for ageing in ex-sherry casks.
