Caperdonich Distillery

During the late 19th century whisky boom, James Grant sought to expand production and founded what was originally known as Glen Grant No. 2, later renamed Caperdonich Distillery. Constructed directly behind the Glen Grant Distillery, it was designed to replicate the distinctive Glen Grant whisky style. However, the industry downturn that followed the boom led to the distillery being mothballed as early as 1902. During its closure, Caperdonich effectively served as a source of spare parts for its larger neighbouring distillery.

With whisky demand rising again in the 1960s, the owners decided to restore and reopen the dormant distillery. By this time, Grant Grant Distillers had merged with Glenlivet and several blending companies to form The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. in 1972.

Extensive modernisation accompanied the reopening in 1965, and in its first year of renewed production the distillery produced more than 1.3 million litres of spirit. Capacity was further expanded two years later with the installation of an additional pair of steam-heated stills and more washbacks. Production processes also became highly automated.

In 1977, Seagram acquired the distillery, and much of Caperdonich’s output was subsequently used in blends such as Chivas Regal. Ownership later passed to Pernod Ricard in 2001, which mothballed the distillery the following year.

Large sections of the site were sold to Forsyths in 2010, and the distillery buildings were demolished in 2011.
