Is it Whisky or Whiskey?
The word whisky has Gaelic origins. Over time the Gaelic spelling was anglicised to 'whisky'. Industrialisation, competition and quality concerns pushed distillers in Ireland and Scotland to differentiate their products using a different spelling.
Newspaper editors all over the world issued stylistic guidelines in the 1960's and due to the different spellings in different countries many words were changed and their spread.
